Reser’s Tournament of Champions 2024 Day 1 recap: Newberg eyes 3-peat, two No. 1 seeds go down

The Tigers hold the overnight lead by 31½ points over La Grande

Two-time defending champion Newberg finds itself in good position to win a third consecutive Reser’s Tournament of Champions team title after the first of two days of competition at Liberty High School in Hillsboro.

The Tigers hold the overnight lead by 31½ points over La Grande after the quarterfinal round was completed Friday night.

All four of Newberg’s returning champions breezed into Saturday morning’s semifinal round. Senior Isaac Hampton won his 126-pound quarterfinal with a second-round pin on Harrisburg’s Jackson Peterman, and sophomore Gavin Rangel (132), junior Gus Amerson (150) and senior Trae Frederick (157) also advanced.

Roseburg senior Gage Singleton, who won the 113 title last year, also reached the semifinals at 120 this weekend, and last year’s 160-pound champion, senior Jackson Potts of Mountain, moved on at 175.

Only two No. 1 seeds fell on Day 1, including a stunner in the first round of the 285-pound division when Thurston junior Peighton Rofinot won a 7-5 decision against Harrisburg junior Hunter Langham.

Later, Newberg sophomore Kiah Worthington pinned Illinois Valley sophomore James Conn with 10 seconds remaining in the second round of their 106 quarterfinal.

Action resumes at 10 a.m. Saturday with semifinals on two mats. The championship matches are scheduled to begin at 5:15 p.m.
